TED NUSBAUM

2006 First Runner-Up

Ted Nusbaum is a screenwriter, playwright, journalist and MFA candidate at the New School for Drama (formerly the Actors Studio Drama School).  Mr.  Nusbaum taught high school English in New York City and Long Island for five years before pursuing a career in the arts.

Mr. Nusbaum’s first screenplay, “Atlantic Beach”,was a Quarterfinalist in the Nicholl Fellowships for Screenwriting in 2002.  His second screenplay, “Unlovable”, was a Finalist in the Script P.I.M.P. (Pipeline into Motion Pictures) Screenwriting Competition in 2003 and was optioned by Los Angeles producer, David Schwartz.  His most recent screenplay, “Little Brother of War”, was First Runner Up in the Brass Brad Screenwriting Mentorship Award.

Karen Nourse Productions selected Mr. Nusbaum’s one-act play, “(In)Sight” for production into a short film in 2004.  The play, an honorable mention in the American Gem Short Screenplay Competition, was shot and produced in 2004.  Mr. Nusbaum looks forward to the production of two plays, “Pischer” and “Circling Back” in the Spring of 2006 at The New School for
Drama.

Mr. Nusbaum has worked as a script reader and literary intern for several production companies including Benderspink (Hollywood, CA), Killer Films (NYC), Emerging Pictures (NYC), and MCC Theater (NYC).  As a journalist, Mr. Nusbaum published various travel articles in National Geographic Adventure Magazine, Blue Magazine, and online for Gorp.com.  He worked as a Reporter and Senior Editor for the Fire Island News in 2000.

On a personal note, Mr. Nusbaum feels grateful to his wife, Chana, for the arrival of his first child, Benjamin, in June of 2005.  They all reside - in close quarters - on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

“Little Brother of War” is a sports drama about a
troubled teenager who overcomes self-destructiveness
and his father’s favoritism to become the lacrosse
star he’s destined to be - but only after facing his
phenom younger brother and coach-father in the
Pennsylvania State Lacrosse Playoffs at Lincoln
Financial Field.

“Atlantic Beach” is a “Heaven Can Wait” fantasy about
a man who dies in a freak accident and must complete
three tests back on earth for a chance to rewrite his
destiny. However, when the tests cruelly overlap in
time, he is forced to choose between saving his wife
or unborn daughter.

“Unlovable” is a romantic comedy about a perennial
Manhattan bachelor who suffers from a family curse
which makes him "unlovable". The first male child
born in every generation of the Zuckerman Clan is
doomed to date a woman for three months, break up with
her, then watch her find the man of her dreams. But
when Michael meets the woman of his dreams - the one
who finally dumps him - he seeks to break the curse to
win her back in time.

“Toby”: A Thanksgiving dramedy about the seemingly
perfect college kid who comes home for the holidays
wanting to be accepted by his “L.L. Bean” cousins but
learns that his true place is with his own family,
quirks and eccentricities included.

“Untitled”: A caper/heist dramedy about four company
men on the brink of retirement who lose everything
they have in the wake of a corporate scandal. Brought
together by outrage and a desire for revenge, they
scheme to pull off an epic theft of the greed mongers
in charge.

“Cliff and Kate” is a romantic comedy about a shy
Manhattan bachelor who joins a dating cafe at the
advice of his best friend but ends up falling in love
with the unlucky in love matron in charge who has
permanently sworn off men.

“The Doomsday Proposal” is a drama about two best
friends and the girl who comes between them. The play
is set against a future nuclear attack on a major
metropolitan area in the United States.

“Pischer” is an intense boiler room drama/thriller
about a Jewish terrorist cell in the West Bank on the
eve a of a big operation when the new recruit has
second thoughts about carrying out the attack.

“Circling Back”: A comedy about a new couple away on
their first vacation together and learn way too much
about themselves and each other.

“Colleagues”: A satire of the teaching profession, in
particular, the corrupting politics of going for tenure at a public high school on Long Island.
